As per the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities stands at 7.2 percent, whereas for those without disabilities, it is 3.5 percent. According to the 2023 Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals with disabilities are twice as likely to be unemployed. The report also noted that workers with disabilities were more inclined to be self-employed compared to those without disabilities. This is despite the fact that people with disabilities make up 13 percent of the population in 2023. In addition, individuals with disabilities are 29 percent more likely to only have a part-time job. Therefore, it becomes difficult for families and individuals with disabilities financially. This proposal aims to offer a solution to the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities, while also empowering them with vocational skills that will enable them to not only secure jobs but also advance within their chosen careers. 

The primary objective of The House of Butterflies Café is to provide individuals with disabilities the necessary support to develop vocational skills. During my tenure at the California Department of Rehabilitation spanning two years, I took on the role of aiding and instructing more than 75 students, aged between 16 and 22 years. My responsibilities included assisting in the creation of resumes, providing career advice, and delivering remote job coaching. However, it was apparent that many individuals within the Department of Rehabilitation Student Service became disheartened due to their lack of professional hands-on job coaching. 

Thus, The House of Butterflies Café provides individuals with a Job to acquire hands-on job coaching, while also offering a conducive environment for personal and professional growth. The opportunity has the potential to provide individuals with a chance to reintegrate into the workforce. For some individuals, this will serve as their initial entry into the workforce. Meanwhile striving to teach strong customer service skills, leaving consumers happy and wanting to come back.
